Vegemite is set to slash its salt content by nearly HALF - but not everyone is happy
Iconic Australian spread Vegemite has announced a variation to their recipe.
Bega Cheese, Vegemite's parent company, this week launched a new alternative to the classic spread with 40 per cent less salt.
The variation was developed in less than a year and is aimed at Vegemite fans who have dietary requirements.
Vegemite Senior Marketing Manager Matt Gray told News Corp it tastes just like the original recipe - just slightly less salty.

'Our research has indicated that older Australians, as well as families with children are looking to reduce their salt intake,' he said.
'Therefore, it was important that we introduced a Vegemite product that all Australians can continue to enjoy – whether it’s for breakfast, lunch or tea.'
The 40 per cent less salt Vegemite will replace the 25 per cent less salt version variety and provide a healthier alternative for customers.

'Our expert tasting panel were heavily involved in the research and development phase, and were key to validating that the Vegemite has a great Vegemite taste,' he said.
The new variation was announced on Vegemite's social pages and drew a wealth of comments praising their new healthier product.

Other comments weren't so supportive.
'What’s the point? Vegemite is supposed to be lovably salty,' one comment reads.
'Don’t ruin an icon,' another post says.
'For 58 years I have had Vegemite on toast for breakfast everyday. Don't destroy life's one simple pleasure,' another comment reads.
The 40 per cent less salt Vegemite will be available from Coles supermarkets around the country from Tuesday.
Vegemite was officially certified as vegan friendly in November after passing the Vegan Australia certification process by 'doing absolutely nothing to its recipe'.
