Police say another person has died after horror crash on M25 between van and three cars after cop ch

Another person has died after a horrific crash on the M25 between a van being chased by police and three others cars left one woman dead. 

The woman, who was not in the van being pursued, was already known to have been killed in the 'serious road traffic collision' which happened at around 4am on Sunday morning.

The force has now confirmed a man also died in the collision. His family are being supported by specially trained officers.

A man in his twenties has been arrested by police on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.

Police say they had stopped pursuing the van moments before the crash and confirmed that the incident has been referred to the police watchdog. 

The condition of the other people involved in the accident is unknown.

The M25 will remain closed between junctions 22 and 25 while authority handle the aftermath of the collision, which is believed to have wreckage scattered across all four lanes.

Hertfordshire Police said: 'The M25 remains closed between junctions 22 (London Colney) and 21A (North Orbital Road/St Albans) following a collision at around 4am this morning.

'Officers were in pursuit of a van before the van was involved in a collision with three other vehicles.

'No police vehicles were involved in the collision and the pursuit had been stood down prior to the collision.

'A woman has sadly passed away and her family are being supported by specially trained officers.

'As a matter of course, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.'

The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) said: 'We are investigating the police actions prior to a fatal road traffic collision on the M25 earlier today.

'We understand around 4am this morning (Sunday 4 February) Hertfordshire Constabulary were in pursuit of a van before the van was involved in a collision.

'The incident, involving three other vehicles, was between Watford and St Albans. No police vehicles were involved in the collision and the pursuit had been stood down prior to the collision.

'We sent our investigators to the scene and to the post incident procedure to begin the process of gathering information.

'Our investigation is in the very early stages.'

A forensic investigation is also underway.
