One rose to fame playing a vampire at the age of 12, while the other gained recognition after taking the lead in sadomasochistic romance Secretary back in 2002.

And it seems both Maggie Gyllenahaal and Kirsten Dunst have maintained their wild sides somewhat as they proved while embracing their inner punks with a twist at the Met Ball on Monday evening in New York.

While 35-year-old Maggie thought she may be the only one displaying some serious side boob in her eye-catching ensemble,  31-year-old Kirsten gave her a run for her money as she did the same in her plunging feathered gown.

Opting for red, which is a colour often associated with anarchy – the famous red Circle- A is the best-known present-day symbol for the political movement – Maggie ensured she turned heads.

But while the colour alone was enough to stand out, it was when she stood to the side, and ample side boob could be seen, that she really shone. 

The plunging Calvin Klein gown also showed off her cleavage when she stood straight on but it seemed to feature a strange pleated detail in the chest area that made it look like the dress didn’t fit properly.

She teamed the dress with Roger Vivier shoes, which couldn’t be seen beneath her long gown and she carried a small Tod’s clutch.

Completing her punk look Maggie, who was accompanied by her husband Peter Sarsgaard, wore a studded silver Bulgari choker necklace, which looked like one an original punk would have worn back in the 80s.

Not going the whole way though her pixie cut hair was worn flat on her head and she opted for red lips and rosy cheeks.

Kirsten meanwhile gave Maggie a run for her money in her cleavage exposing Louis Vuitton dress.

The plunging deep green number, which was cut to her navel, also gave a glimpse of side boob when she stood to the side.

And as she turned around the whole of her back was exposed showing that her ample chest was not supported by a bra.

It wasn't just the top section of the dress which was eye-catching though as the skirt featured an interesting smattering of feathers on it.

Completing her look she wore her blonde hair in loose curls down her back and like Maggie she opted for a dash of red lipstick.

The annual gala highlights the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s spring exhibition: PUNK: Chaos to Couture in New York. 

It was co-chaired by Rooney Mara, Moda Operandi creative director Lauren Santo Domingo, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci, and Vogue editor Anna Wintour.
