Mini Aussie Shepherd Trying To Get Teeth Brushed Has 24M in Stitches
Some people say that owning a dog is like having a child and in many ways this seems to ring true. Like parents, owners have to take care of their furry friends and stay on top of their personal hygiene.
One woman has recently shared on Instagram how her miniature Australian shepherd reacts every time she gets his toothbrush out.
The footage shows Leo staring at his owner with his piercing blue eyes before opening his mouth and showing off his gnashers.
The hilarious video shared to a page dedicated to the dog @kingleo_theminiaussie has amassed 24.8 million views.
What Happens if You Don't Brush Your Dog's Teeth?
According to the American Veterinarian Medical Association, not brushing your pets teeth won't just lead to bad breath, but can cause decayed teeth and gum disease.
Periodontal disease is the most common canine dental condition in dogs and cats. It starts with plaque that turns into tartar. If it's above the gumline then it can be easily seen and removed, but the real problems occur when the tartar is below the gumline which can lead to infections. Along with damage to the jawbone and the tissues that connect the tooth to the jaw bone.
The treatment for this disease involves a thorough dental cleaning and X-rays to determine the severity. This disease doesn't just affect your pet's mouth; it can lead to other health problems affecting the animal's kidney, liver, and heart muscle.
How To Brush Your Dog's Teeth
The text layered over the video asks: "Does anyone else's dog do this when you're about to brush their teeth?"
But some owners may not be able to relate as pet dental care is often overlooked, according to the American Kennel Club. The purebred registry website has provided the following tips aimed to help owners make sure their pet has a set of pearly whites.
- Always use a dog-friendly toothpaste as human products contain xylitol and fluoride that could cause significant harm.
- Get your dog used to brushing—to start, touch their teeth without a brush and slowly but surely, build their trust.
- Don't forget to praise and reward them to make it a positive experience.
