Brittany Murphy's stepdaughter has spoken out for the first time about the mystery surrounding the deaths of her father and the Clueless star, admitting: 'They were both young when they died - too young to die - it's weird.'

Pretty Jazmyn Newman, 18, was just seven when she last saw her dad Simon Monjack, and grew up in the UK with her mother Marcia Newman in Luton, Bedfordshire - a world away from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

Jazmyn only heard about reports the couple may have been poisoned for the first time this week, and said: 'My dad wasn't the healthiest guy in the world because he was quite overweight, but I didn't expect him to die that soon.'

'I think they were poisoned. But Brittany's mum lived in the same house, so why would she not have died from the same thing as them, especially as she was older?'

Even though she had a sporadic relationship with her father, Jazmyn dotes on his mother Linda Monjack, and says she fully supports her grandmother's attempts to delve into her father and Brittany's deaths.

However, Jazmyn, who is studying beauty at college and works part time in a tanning and sunbed shop, is not too happy at the prospect of her father's body being exhumed as part of an investigation, saying: 'Surely it's a bit late now anyway - he's six foot under and has been dead for four years.

'My nan has looked after me a lot, I couldn't ask for a better nan and granddad. My nan was traumatised when my dad died.'

Speaking about her father, Jazmym added: 'I was about 15 when he died, I remember my mum came and took me out of school for the day.

'When he died, I was told lots of different reasons for it because no one really knew. I heard heart problems and pneumonia, so there wasn't really one story.'

Brittany's father Angelo Bertolotti claims his daughter, who died aged 32 on December 20, 2009, may have died from rat poisoning after demanding independent laboratory tests.

Investigation: Simon Monjack, the husband of Brittany Murphy, died in eerily similar circumstances to the star, just five months after her death in December 2009. Now, pathologist Dr Cyril Wecht has been brought on board by Brittany's father Angelo Bertolotti

MailOnline revealed Mr Bertolotti feared his daughter and British screenwriter Simon - who died in almost identical circumstances in the same Los Angeles house five months apart - were targeted by shadowy government agents for offering her support to a Department of Homeland Security whistleblower.

Simon died aged 40 on May 23, 2010, and Jazmyn said: 'No one has ever mentioned the poison idea to me before. I only found out about the whole thing this week and it makes sense.'

She added: "We weren't very close because he lived in America but he would ring sometimes and we'd chat.

'We hadn't really come into that much contact for years and years before his death and the last time I saw him was when I was seven.

'He was nice, but I didn't go and visit him because I was too young, so I never met Brittany. My nan said he had a good sense of humour.

'The whole fame thing and him being married to a movie star never really bothered me because I didn't know who she was.'

The teen said when she was younger her dad would spoil her by taking her shopping to luxury London department store Harrods.

However, this stopped when he moved abroad and Jazmyn and her mother were left with nothing after his death.

She said: 'My parents broke up when I was two so I don't remember them ever being a couple, but my dad lived in England when I was younger.

'He would take me out to Harrods and get clothes and stuff but now I live in Luton. He moved abroad and I didn't speak to him for ages.

'When I was with my dad I saw his money but not when he left. He didn't pay child support. He didn't leave my mum anything at all when he died, no money at all.'

Speaking to MailOnline this week, Linda Monjack revealed it had been hard to collect any more evidence as the Hollywood Hills home her son shared with his wife and her mother Sharon Murphy had been 'razed to the ground'.

Brittany bought the property from pop stars Britney Spears for $3.85million in June 2003 and following Brittany and Simon's deaths, Sharon Murphy suspected their deaths were due to mould inside the home, however, Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter told CNN in July 2010: 'There were no indicators that it was from mould.'

Mrs Monjack said this week her son found 'severe mold' in the house, adding: 'All I know is that before Simon's death he was having hallucinations that things were crawling out of his skin. He was distraught and he was getting fatter and more bloated. He wasn't someone who took drugs; he was always too fearful.'

'All this time later and we are still trying to find out what happened. I haven't got a single one of his possessions, no photos, nothing from his portfolio. I know he had an Andy Warhol but Sharon said it was Brittany's. She wouldn't let me take anything. She said he was broke and didn't have any money and yet she said she absolutely adored my son.

Mrs Monjack, speaking from her home in Bourne End, England, to MailOnline this week, added: 'I have a feeling that something is terribly wrong'

'I believe that lots of things were covered up that should not have been covered up and I do know that my son died unnecessarily in circumstances that are very, very suspect,' she added.

'It never crossed my mind before,' she said of speculation there could have been foul play, 'but now it has.' as she claimed the couple were 'very, very fearful of so many things.'

'Simon did say he was under surveillance. He was detained by the American government because his passport had run out. He said he was followed and beaten up and he was detained for nine days,' she said.

'Brittany got him out eventually, but from then on they felt there was a deep conspiracy. There is definitely something here that's not right - but what it is I don't know.

'At the funeral in Los Angeles, Brittany's mother, Sharon, insisted on going to the service in an armored car and there were security guards with guns.

'When I flew over immediately after Simon died I asked Sharon if I could sit in his room on my own but she wouldn't let me stay there without a security guard.'

Mrs Monjack said she had been unable to contact Sharon - despite numerous attempts. Sharon, who still lives in Los Angeles, has so far been uncontactable and when her former publicist was reached, he said he no longer worked with her.

Mrs Monjack added: 'She won't answer any of my calls. There are so many levels of craziness to everything that has happened.'

Aware of Brittany's father's attempts to find out more about the mysterious deaths, Mrs Monjack said could never understand why the Los Angeles Coroner’s office came up with the finding that the couple both died from pneumonia and anemia.

She said the coroner still has blood, hair and tissue samples from both Brittany's and Simon's bodies - so there is no real need to exhume either body.

'Nobody has answered any of my questions and the coroner’s office only did the most basic of tests,' said the spiritualist. 'Simon's blood is in the coroner’s office. I would like his blood to be checked. It was exactly the same indications of death for both Simon and Brittany.

‘There is so much in this case that hasn't been picked up on. At first I thought it was all part of the craziness of Los Angeles but nothing has really been done in the right way at all.'

Speaking to MailOnline from his LA office, coroner Ed Winter said that, for now, he stands by the findings from Brittany's original autopsy.

He said: 'We haven't received any report or any documentation from Brittany's father, so we are not going to comment on what the report says or doesn't say. We stand by our final ruling on it until something otherwise is shown to us.'

Stating the findings from the original autopsy, he said: 'Pneumonia, and Brittany was anemic and took over the counter prescription medication. They were just cold medications, they were in the final report. Simon had prescription medication.

'Simon's was pneumonia, he was also anemic and he had prescription drugs, intoxication from prescription drugs. There were a number of drugs that were found on him.'

Speaking about the role of drugs in both their deaths, he added: 'Evidently Simon had a habit, and I guess Brittany fell into it too, that when they became ill they would medicate, self medicate.'

Asked if he would consider exhuming Brittany's body for more tests, Mr Winter said they will review any evidence Brittany's father Angelo presents them with. He said: 'That would have to be reviewed, we're not going to comment on 'yes we will or no we won't', it's speculation of what the report says."

But asked if he saw the report and whether it did show something that would prompt him consider exhuming Brittany, Winter said: 'Maybe it would be considered, but we'd also have to figure out what the criteria that the lab that did the testing (used). Testing of hair, can sometimes not be exact, especially if people dye their hair or something that can change a lot of issues.

'Brittany coloured her hair, different colours for different roles. It depends on whether or not we can see the report and there can be any foundation.'

Mr Winter admitted they didn't test for poisons in the original autopsy on Brittany.
He said: 'No we didn't run it for metals, we ran our normal scan that we do and there was nothing other than the non-prescription medications. There was nothing to lead us to believe she was poisoned.'

Winter told how the coroner's office usually discards samples from dead bodies after six months but because her father Angelo had indicated he would want to obtain them at some stage they kept some.

It was over a year ago that Angelo - who had been estranged from his daughter - applied to obtain her hair samples. Mr Winter revealed her mom Sharon at one stage DENIED he was her legal next of kin, but eventually they obtained her birth certificate so he could go ahead and get the samples.

He said he has heard Angelo is sending his new findings to him to review, adding: 'As of yesterday afternoon I heard from another media source that he had them mailed to us, he dropped them in the mail Friday. We have not received it to my knowledge.'

Julia Davis

'Poison': Ms David revealed independent toxicology tests had found that Brittany had ten times the safe WHO levels of some heavy metals in her body - chemicals commonly found in rat poison or bug killer

He added: 'When any parent loses a child whether or not it's a close relationship or whatever, there's a loss and I think Angelo is just trying to figure out why because she was a young lady - she shouldn't have died.'

Asked if he knew what Angelo's real theory is to how his daughter died, Winter said:  "No you would have to ask him.'

Brittany's 87-year-old father alleges that at the time of her death his daughter was under surveillance from government operators who wiretapped her phone and terrorized her after she spoke out in support of Department of Homeland Security whistleblower Julia Davis.

Ms Davis, who claims to have once worked as a stunt double for Angelina Jolie, says Brittany was being persecuted for standing up for her.

Ms Davis claimed she was branded a 'domestic terrorist' after she exposed security flaws that were allowing terrorists to sneak into the U.S. while she was working as a border security guard in California.

The extraordinary claims are what drove Brittany's father to campaign to have a separate toxicology test conducted on the star.

In a report for Examiner.com, Ms Davis wrote that scientists at independent Carlson Company laboratories found ten heavy metals in Brittany's system, which was several times higher than World Health Organization high levels at the time of her death.

'If we were to eliminate the possibility of a simultaneous accidental heavy metals exposure to the sample donor then the only logical explanation would be an exposure to these metals (toxins) administered by a third party perpetrator with likely criminal intent,' the report says.

Campaign: Mr Bertolotti is writing a book with Ms Davis on the mystery. A family member told MailOnline: 'You just don’t have two people die like that under those circumstances'

Heavy metals are found in most rodenticides and insecticides meaning the actress could have been slipped rat poisoning or bug killer.

However, a family friend told MailOnline: 'The coroner has examined everything, the whole idea of rat poison or a conspiracy is insane. Let them rest in peace.'
